Why DIY Doesn’t Work & What to do About It.
If Pinterest boards were the answer, you’d already love your home by now.
Most people I know are not hiring an interior designer to decorate their homes. They’re DIY-ing. And they’re stressed, overwhelmed, creatively blocked, and they don’t even know how to get started let alone complete an entire room.
The Pinterest boards aren’t working. The tips, tricks and hacks aren’t working. Every decision opens up 5 more you didn’t think about, which sends you into yet another spiral. You berate yourself thinking, “Why can’t I finish decorating my house?” As if it’s somehow your fault the decorating paralysis demon shows up every time you feel an ounce of whimsy.
Your home sits for weeks, months or even years unfinished. It might not even feel like home at all.
If that’s you, I know what you’re going through.
Why DIY Doesn’t Work
Listen, I am FAN of DIY. That’s why I’m here in the first place! But I know first hand it’s not easy. It’s time consuming, can be surprisingly expensive — not just monetarily, but emotionally and mentally, too — and you’re doing it all by yourself.
That’s enough to make anyone lose their mind.
At the end of the day, you want a room that feels like a dream to walk into. You want to come home, and instead of a room you avoid, you want a room that you can’t wait to melt into. But getting there is so difficult, it starts to feel impossible.
I you don’t want to settle for a lackluster space, but I also know that after a while, that feels easier than trying. I have been there, my friend. So let’s talk about it.
DIY Paralysis
This is so insidious and so so common:
You’re unhappy with the room, and you imagine what it would be like if it was everything you imagine to the point that you can viscerally feel it.
You have some ideas, but you’re not exactly sure on the details, so you get on Pinterest for some ✨inspo.✨
You Pin and save, feeding your excitement. You feel motivated, you’re having fun, and it’s feeling real!
Then you go to add to cart, and the hesitation creeps in.
“If I buy this coffee table, will it go with my sofa?”
“I guess I need to paint — should I do that first? I don’t even know what color I’d do.”
“If I change the paint then I have to change the rug, right?”
You deflate like a week-old birthday balloon, slowly drifting back to the ground.
Now you’re right back where you started: stuck, overwhelmed, uncomfortable with no idea what to do about it.
DIY Burnout
DIY decorating burnout is real, and I’ve never heard anyone talk about it openly.
Let’s say you’re an old hat at DIY, and this ain’t your first rodeo. You’re plugging along, doing your thing, making swaps and changes here and there.
But then life happens. The room freezes in place. You’ll get back to it.
But when? How? Life doesn’t actually care about dream bedroom, as much as it should, IMO, so you try to squeeze it in when you can in between family, friends, work, pets, exercise, nutrition and drinking your damn water.
But you’re exhausted. Too exhausted at the end of most days to even think, let alone battle the paint aisle and choose between off-white and beige.
DIY really knows how to emphasize the Y, doesn’t it? Doing it yourself usually means doing it all alone — holding the ideas, the planning, the decisions and the execution.
It’s a wonder anyone gets anything done, for real!
The Hidden Costs of DIY
And then there’s the investment. While I agree, DIY is much more affordable than hiring a designer — especially when it’s truly cosmetic improvements, but what about all the money that goes into “figuring it out?”
I used to be such a trend chaser and impulse buyer— I would get these bursts of motivation, hit Home Goods, and come home with all kinds of random stuff that I didn’t actually care about. I was bored in 6 months. Rinse. Repeat. I wasted so much money guessing and making half-assed attempts that fizzled out when the weekend was over.
Aside from the money, everything I already mentioned takes a huge toll on your energy, your mental health and even your confidence!
It’s a lot to turn on your creative side, and when it doesn’t go as planned or you feel frozen in place, it drains you, making you feel like you can’t do it at all, and you’re doomed to a house that you’re low-key a little embarrassed to show people.
Move Over DIY. DIT is Comin’ Thru
So, what’s the solution to the DIY purgatory we all live in? Well, I think there’s another way. I like to call this “DIT”— Do It Together.
Instead of crashing out in the paint aisle, what if you had someone to help you plan and pick your color palette so you could walk in with confidence?
Rather than ruminating over a rug for 6 months, what if someone knew the vision you were going for and told you if it made sense or what you should do instead?
What if you didn’t have to make 500 decisions and the room still came together in just a few weeks?
That’s the power of DIT, baby!
You Don’t Have to DIY Alone Anymore
I have been in your shoes too many times to count, and I eventually realized that if I was struggling with this (and I’m a naturally creative person) I bet soooo many others were too.
That’s why I created The Home Alchemy Method. We work together on your space so you don’t have to make every decision alone anymore. We craft your vision together, map out the space and move week by week through every step of styling a space that feels perfect for you.
No more paralysis. No more burnout. No more wasting your life trying to “get it right” all by yourself.
You’re home finally gets done. You finally love it. And then you get back to your life, enjoying the room like you always wanted to do.
What Comes Next
The Home Alchemy Method is opening for students late Summer/early Fall 2026, and if it sounds like something you’ve been needing, you can join the waitlist to be the first in the doors when it’s live.
In the meantime, I’d love to offer you a free Vibe Check Room Audit so I can look at your space and start giving you some ideas to play with. If you want to do that, go ahead and click right here.
DIY is, in the infamous words of Kristin Cavallari, DONEZO.
Thanks for reading this, and I’ll talk to you soon!
