How to Design a Magnetic Home

A magnetic home is one that radiates your magnetism… you just have to stop hiding it

Summary:

Your home reflects and amplifies whatever energy you pour into it. It creates a feedback loop to your real life, and it impacts everything you do. Decorating used to just be about making shit look pretty and posting cute vignettes online, but that era is over now. More than ever our homes need to be a refuge, a light and a power bank to charge and radiate the magnetism that lives inside all of us. Follow the 12-week Magnetic Home series and learn how to take decorating your home to a whole new level.

If you’ve ever fantasized about becoming the ultimate version of yourself — the confident one, the relaxed one, the joyful one, the fit one — but the distance between where that version exists and where you are feels like planets away. This is the series for you.

Now that it’s officially fall (yay), it’s time to go inward. It’s time to retreat to the dark corners and rooms that have been lit up by summer’s enduring glow.

When the light starts to fade every year, I’m always somehow caught off guard. I’m always ready for slower, quieter months, but I’m never ready for the dark.

As I have felt my own energy dip, I’ve wanted to sleep a lot more, do a lot less and spend my time on what’s important. I’ve been asking myself what the right tonic for this time of year would be, not just for myself, but for anyone in the Alchemy of Home community.

The answer came subtly, but I’m sure it’s the right one. I’ll say it again: now is the time to go deeper – to retreat into our roots and let the nutrients of this season feed what needs to grow and release what needs to die.

In that spirit, I want us to connect deeply to our homes and to ourselves in this time so we’re going to go on a little journey, if you will.

For the Autumn season, we’re going to explore several aspects of our inner world and figure out how to translate them to our outer world, creating a richer, more fully aware and connected life within and without our homes — literally and metaphorically.

Let’s lean into the season and explore the dark depths together, shall we?

The Magnetic Home

This series will likely go deeper into your home than you’ve ever gone before, because to create a magnetic home, we ourselves have to become magnetic. So what does that mean?

To be magnetic, to me, means that you’re living a life that feels deeply and undeniably you.

Ask yourself this: When you feel most yourself — not necessary happy or productive or whatever — but most like you, where are you? What are you doing? Who’s there? How do you feel?

To me, it’s a Saturday night in with my best friends. We’re wearing sweats, rotating between beating dead horses, deep heart to hearts and laughing our asses off. No makeup, maybe some good food, chill lighting — a total vibe.

I also feel most myself when I’m alone in a new place. I love being able to privately absorb the beauty and novelty of somewhere I’ve never been without having to narrate my experience or hurry up because we have to get to the next place. I feel so deeply alive in these moments.

That’s the level of magnetism I’m talking about. It’s when you lose yourself to the moment, when you feel fully alive, present and in the world. Those moments feel easy. They feel like they could last forever. You’re not thinking about how you look or what you need to get done the next day. You’re not worrying about that weird thing you said to a coworker a month ago. You’re not out for anyone’s approval. You’re just there, enjoying life.

On being magnetic

Two different sides of me, both as magnetic as it gets.

So, What Makes a Magnetic Home?

A magnetic is the one that makes you feel so deeply yourself — it’s living in the reflection of your own magnetism every day. It’s the place that’s so much more than just a house. It’s designed around you, your life, your loves, your passions — it’s even designed around the things you despise, and the things you’ve overcome and become stronger from as a result.

For me, it’s the perfect lighting that’s set to timers that kick on just as the afternoon light is fading.
It’s a bedroom that feels romantic, sensual and deeply restorative, where I can go inward and let the entire day settle then slip away before bed.
It’s a living room that makes anyone who comes over feel immediately at home because it’s full of fun things to look at and it smells really good!

You get to define what a magnetic home is for you. In fact, you must! But you might not know what the hell that even means, so let’s talk about what a magnetic home is not.

Girl, Your Energy is Leaking

For most of my life, my energy and magnetism poured out of me, almost desperately, searching and reaching for the things I thought would make me feel complete and happy:

  • Jobs

  • Relationships

  • Things

I chased things with the belief that appearing to be a certain way would make me more attractive, competent and loved.

I’m here to tell you to no one’s surprise that it didn’t work.

Chasing an image is not the same as embodying the identity.

The images we want to project create a mask over ourselves that looks (or at least we think it looks) one way to the world but usually feels wildly different to us internally.

In my case, I felt satisfaction and relief any time I attained a status-marker, but it was short-lived. These “accomplishments” always came with fear and anxiety that it would crumble or fall apart at any minute.

I used to describe my internal state as “a shaky chihuahua rattling around in my rib cage.”

I didn’t know what I wanted. I didn’t know what I liked. I didn’t know what opinions I really held because I was always looking outside of myself for answers I was avoiding looking at inside me.

Everyone’s version of a magnetic home looks wildly different, and that’s the real magnetic beauty of it.

When we look around our homes, they reflect this directly:

  • The bedroom that doesn’t feel romantic or even like a place that commands rest. You avoid it, you don’t connect with yourself (or a partner) at a sensory level, and you sleep like shit.

  • The entry way that’s a chaotic mess, scattering energy as it enters and leaves the house. You’re frazzled in and you’re frazzled out.

  • The cluttered bathroom that makes daily hygiene feel like a chore to plug through rather than a few moments to care for yourself. You rush around, knock things over, and get technically clean, but mentally, there’s no hygiene in sight

And the results are felt.

  • It looks like auto-piloting through things that actually suck, like tripping over the same damn dog toys every fucking day

  • It looks like repeating bad habits just because they’re a set-in pattern. You beat the same dead horses (not in a fun way) because you and your partner mutually collapse on the couch after work day in and day out, doomscrolling side by side

  • It looks like chronic fatigue because you refuse to make personal changes that could actually help you rest more.

Reclaiming Magnetism Starts at Home

The thing about being truly magnetic is that it requires radical honesty with yourself, which in turn, radiates into the rest of the world.

I’m not gonna lie: sometimes it feels like blowing up your life. Not always. Not always entirely. Sometimes entirely.

True magnetism and radical honesty sometimes mean:

  • Leaving the relationship

  • Quitting the job

  • Cutting contact

  • Having an excruciating conversation where you cry the whole time you’re choking out the words

  • Moving cities

  • Saying yes

  • Saying no

It is hard, hard work.

It’s work no one can see, either. In fact, it’s work that will make you look crazy in the eyes of everyone who only knows the version of you who needs to exit stage left. The performance is over. The actor is exposed.

But here’s where it gets juicy: your home can do a lot of the heavy lifting for you.

  • Go into the room you avoid and ask yourself: what about this relationship isn’t working, and what do I need to change right now?

  • Go into the room that pisses you off and ask: what has to be severed right now? Then pitch it.

  • Go into the room you’ve been putting off decorating and ask: what would be so much fucking fun to put in this room? Then go do it.

Building this kind of relationship with your home is the backdoor to building it with yourself! Sometimes when we’re not ready to face things head on, practicing in a safe, contained way is a wonderful way to uncover our magnetism and prove to ourselves that it was there all along.

Magnetism is Alchemical

The way we get to our truth is by peeling away the layers we’ve built up over time – all the masks, the “should,” the “not good enoughs,” and the “I’ll be happy whens.”

This work is about stripping down to our base truth and reconstructing the life we want on our own, radically honest terms.

Our homes become a significant piece of this puzzle, and so that’s where our work will begin.

  • When your outer spaces become reflections of our inner world, of our radical truths, we have nowhere to hide. You can’t run from what’s reflecting in the mirror.

  • When you create a home that reflects the beauty and magic of who you are, even on your worst days, you won’t be able to unsee the truth.

  • When it feels like no one else sees you or understands you, you see and understand yourself.

Your home becomes a safe container, a portal to your innermost, most intimate thoughts, desires, dreams and aspirations.

It holds you through the dark nights and lonely days. It keeps you warm when the love you thought was true crumbles to ash between your fingers.

I’m not trying to be dramatic, but this is soul-level work, my friend.

What’s Next?

So, here’s what we’re going to do. Every week for the next 11 weeks, we’re going to explore just one layer of magnetism in ourselves and in our homes. We’re going to figure out what’s blocking the version of ourselves we want to be and how we can create a home that not only reflects, but amplifies who we are under all the masks we’ve accumulated.

Next week, we’re going to start with four blocks we all encounter, how to recognize them and how to remove them through our homes.

We’ll spend time below the hood, rooting out what’s true and what’s not, and we’ll explore practical and strategic ways to transform your home from what it is now, to the one that reflects your most magnetic you.

I think now is the perfect time to do this — to intentionally slow all the way down and ask ourselves what really matters in the seasons ahead.
